General Information

When working as a goldsmith or jeweller, light disturbances on the tool or workpiece can severely impair the result and the quality of the work. As a decisive factor for visual performance and quality, light not only affects our well-being, but also influences our work results. For the best quality, first-class light that is precisely tailored to the needs of the filigree art of goldsmithing is an essential prerequisite. The large number of different lighting variants and light sources often creates confusion and makes it difficult to decide on the right lamp. The quality features according to DIN EN 12464-1 create important reference points and framework conditions when choosing the right lighting for a goldsmith's workplace. In the following, we would like to show you those quality features that you should pay particular attention to in the lighting concept of your jeweler's or goldsmith's workshop.

Illuminance and color rendering

The illuminance is a central lighting parameter and indicates the luminous flux that hits a specific area. For delicate engravings, gemstone settings or the processing of metals, the DIN standard stipulates a minimum illuminance of 1500 lux for lighting in the gold/jewelry workshop. However, since the visibility of the smallest details depends largely on the illuminance, it is recommended to choose a lamp with an illuminance of 2800 lux and up to 3300 lux in dark rooms. The area of final and quality control in particular requires undistorted and natural color reproduction even in artificial light, which is achieved by a CRI > 90 and a corresponding color temperature of 5300 Kelvin. In all other areas of goldsmithing, a CRI > 80 and a color temperature > 5000 Kelvin are sufficient.

Flexibility and glare

Individual craftsmanship requires individually adaptable lights. The various areas of responsibility as a goldsmith require that the lamp can be quickly and easily adapted to the user and the work situation. This is the only way to achieve the best work results at all times.

Especially when working with shiny pieces of jewelry and handling metal tools, annoying light reflections can occur that severely restrict our vision. The causes of glare and reflections are usually an unfavorable luminance distribution or too high a luminance. Especially at high illuminance levels, a balanced brightness distribution and absolutely glare-free light form the basis for trouble-free work when working as a goldsmith.

Aspects of sustainability

The aspects of sustainability, resource conservation and recycling are also becoming increasingly relevant in lighting technology. With needs-based and sustainable goldsmith lighting, energy consumption can be reduced right from the start. This not only pleases nature, but also pays off from an economic point of view. In addition to a high potential for energy savings, there is also an improvement in the quality of light. A light can be dynamically adapted to individual needs by means of a needs-based alignment of the lighting and the latest LED technology. As a result, the light not only promotes well-being and increases the ability to concentrate, but also reduces the error rate. The advantages are obvious - sustainable light protects our environmental resources, saves costs and promotes our well-being.
