Why a proper distribution of light at the workplace is important
Luminance quantifies the perceived brightness of an illuminated surface – a balanced distribution of light in the visual field makes a significant contribution to visual performance and comfort. People perceive extreme differences in brightness as unpleasant, and the visual stress results in fatigue and lack of concentration, among other things. Therefore, it is essential to avoid too high and too low luminance contrasts to prevent an unstimulating and monotonous working environment.
The EN 12464-1 standard recommends a contrast ratio of 3:1 (75% / 25%) between the workplace and the environment. Accordingly, we should illuminate the activity area three times as brightly as the surroundings – this is the only way to ensure the focus of vision on the essentials.
