General Information

For passionate fly fishermen, fly tying is a popular pastime, especially in the dark season when the fishing season is coming to an end. Tying the nymph, wet fly and streamer is a demanding craft that puts a lot of strain on our eyes. In order to be able to precisely recognize the fine twine (dubbing), the hair and the yarn and to reproduce the artificial fly in detail, the right twine light is decisive for an optimal result in addition to manual skills. Especially on gloomy days, the fly tyer needs an additional light source to illuminate the vise in order to be able to tie natural patterns and faithfully reproduce colors. Yellowish, too bright or dazzling light can lead to our eyes and motor skills being negatively affected and the tied bow tie not meeting expectations. In the following, we would like to show you which properties the tie light should have and why it is worth investing in good light to avoid unpleasant surprises later when you go fly fishing.

Illuminance and color rendering

A first important property for the light on the vise is the value of the illuminance. This is particularly crucial for recognizing the small details of the aerobatic fly. In order to be able to see the millimeter-fine threads with the naked eye, we recommend that you use a tying light with an illuminance of at least 2800 lux. For a true-to-life fly, the right choice of color for the dubbing, the hair and the yarn is also crucial. The so-called CRI (Colour rendering index) of a luminaire indicates how naturally a color is recognized in artificial light. The reference value here is sunlight, i.e. natural daylight, which is assigned a CRI value of 100. The higher the CRI value of a binding light, the more realistically the colors of the binding threads are reproduced. Since the right choice of color is crucial for the quality of the tied fly and subsequent success in fly fishing, we recommend lights with a CRI value of at least 80, preferably 90.

Flexibility and glare

With a flexible articulated arm, you can position and move your light using the vise according to your individual needs. Various mounting options allow you to individually integrate the tying light into your fly tying workshop, depending on space requirements and personal preferences.

The delicate, metallic tools used in fly tying, such as fine scissors, dubbing needles or hackle clips, reflect light and can create annoying reflected glare that limits our ability to recognize. The ideal binding light should therefore optimally illuminate the tying rod without causing glare, so that the fine threads can be identified precisely at any time.

Aspects of sustainability

In recent years, the topic of sustainability has become increasingly explosive in the private sector, especially when it comes to lighting. In addition to strong lighting, the aspect of sustainability is also playing an increasingly important role for fly fishers. With particularly long-lasting, efficient LED lights and a light housing made from sustainable materials, the light should not only be an enrichment for the fly tyer himself, but also for animals and the environment. Even though the LED light is probably the most sustainable lighting solution on the market, there are a few things to consider when buying a tying lamp to ensure truly sustainable light in the fly tying workshop. Inferior LED modules that lose light output very quickly and lights that cannot be repaired and have to be replaced immediately if there is a small defect are not uncommon. In the long term, it is worth paying attention to quality, both in the LED modules and in the light housing. Otherwise, the joy of the new lamp will only be short-lived. The result: the binding lamp has to be disposed of prematurely and there can be no question of environmental awareness and resource conservation here.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions from fly tyers.

In contrast to many other providers of workplace lighting, "Lichttechnik Meier" pays special attention to meeting the individual needs of our customers and finding a suitable lighting concept especially for your area of application. The experience we have gathered over the years plays a key role in finding a suitable solution for you. The passion for quality, design, innovation and sustainability is also reflected in our products.

Daylight-like lighting on the tying stick is suitable for tying flies. Furthermore, the luminaire should be flicker-free, optimally glare-free and without UV and heat emission. This prevents the UV adhesive from hardening prematurely or unintentionally. If, in addition to strong illumination, you also want object magnification in order to be able to view the fine details of the artificial fly in an enlarged form, one of our RMD magnifying lamps with different magnification factors is suitable. The wide range of our RMD articulated, flexible arm or magnifying lamp offers a variety of different lighting solutions for fly tyers at a top price-performance ratio.

For the illumination of the fly tying workstation, we recommend choosing an illuminance of at least 2800 lux or more.

A variety of different mounting options allow the lamp to be mounted depending on the spatial conditions and to keep the space around the vise free for work. Depending on the type of lamp, you can choose between direct attachment to the table using a table clamp, a stand, a wall mount or a magnetic base. You can find all the details listed under the respective light or in the accessories category.

In the spirit of sustainability, all of our LED modules can be replaced if damaged, so the lamp does not have to be thrown away immediately. Simply contact us by email, telephone or using the contact form on our website and we will replace the LED modules in your light for a small fee.
