LIGHT FOR GOLDSMITHS
General information for lighting goldsmiths workshops
For goldsmith or jeweler, light interference on instruments or workpieces can affect the quality of the work. As a crucial factor for visual performance and quality, light not only affects our well-being but also influences the results of our work. Therefore, high-quality light, which is exactly tailored to the needs of the filigree goldsmith's art, is an essential factor for best quality. A large number of different lighting options and lighting systems often creates confusion and makes it difficult to choose the right lamp. Important guidelines and general requirements for choosing the right lighting for a goldsmith's workplace can be found in DIN EN 12464-1 standards. Following you will find a compact overview of those quality aspects you should focus on when choosing a solution for your jewelry or goldsmith's workshop.
ILLUMINANCE & COLOUR RENDITION
Illuminance is a key lighting parameter that indicates the luminous flux falling on a particular surface. For filigree engravings, gemstone frames or working with metals, the DIN standard defines a minimum illuminance of 1500 lux for lighting at goldsmiths and jewelers workings. Since the visibility of the smallest details depends largely on the illuminance, jewelers and goldsmiths will need a luminaire with an illuminance of 2800 lux and in dark rooms up to 3300 lux. In the area of final and quality control, natural colour rendering is important and is achieved by a CRI > 90 and a colour temperature of 5300 Kelvin. For all other tasks, a CRI > 80 and a colour temperature > 5000 Kelvin are enough.
Especially when working on shining pieces of jewelry and using metallic instruments, annoying light reflections can disturb our vision. Reasons for glare and reflection are usually an inadequate luminance distribution or an extremely high brightness. Therefore, a balanced brightness distribution and glare-free light form the basis for trouble-free working of goldsmiths, particularly at high illuminance levels.
A further important factor is flexibility the lighting system provides. Individual craftsmanship requires individually adjustable luminaires. The different tasks of a goldsmith or jeweler make it necessary to adjust the luminaire quickly and easily to the user and the work situation. This is the only way to achieve the best results at any time.
