LIGHT FOR WATCHMAKERS
General information for lighting watchmaker workstations
A watchmaker must be able to recognize the smallest details and colours to do precise work when testing, repairing and maintaining watches or manufacturing horology instruments. To meet the high-quality demands of its customers and to be able to work precisely, he needs not only a steady hand but also a light, that is specially designed for his individual needs. Overall room lighting, natural daylight or conventional luminaires generally don't suffice the lighting needs of such a filigree craft. Besides, there is an increased risk of accidents and a negative impact on health if the light at the workstation is inadequate or poor. Therefore, it is crucial to know where to look when choosing your task light. An important reference point here is the corresponding guidelines and DIN standards for the lighting of watchmaker workplaces which should always be met. In the following, we will show you the most important features and characteristics of good light for the watchmaker to help you in your choice of the right lighting.
ILLUMINANCE & COLOUR RENDITION
Illuminance describes the ratio of luminous flux to the illuminated surface. With increasing illuminance, visual performance also rises so that contrast and contours can be better seen. We, therefore, recommend an RMD light with illuminance in the range of 2800 to 3300 lux for the precision mechanical work of a watchmaker, such as a dial assembly, replacement of individual parts or quality control. Additionally, the light should have a balanced luminance distribution to avoid disturbing shadows and illuminate not only partial areas but also the entire workplace at the same time. To ensure exact colour visibility, it is advisable for you to have a luminaire with a colour rendition index of CRI>90 for final inspection work and CRI>80 for all other tasks.
At least as equally important for watchmakers is a glare-free and flicker-free light when working with shiny pieces. Dazzle can limit our recognition and can have a negative impact on the user's health. Therefore, luminaires with optimum glare control, adapted luminance distribution and good glare protection are a prerequisite when illuminating a watchmaker's workstation to ensure the trouble-free performance of the visual task. To avoid any reflection glare when working with shiny parts, the LEDs of RMD workplace luminaires for watchmakers are covered with an opal white screen.
Thanks to innovative articulated arm technology, the lamp can be easily adjusted to suit the watchmaker's activities and offers a wide range of movement in different situations. In this way, the watchmaker can move the luminaire to the desired position within a few seconds, depending on the application requirements and daylight hours. Additionally, he can adjust the illuminance individually by means of a dimmer switch to achieve optimum lighting conditions anytime.
